Finding a Therapist in Roanoke, VA
Look for a licensed or supervised clinician who serves Roanoke or Vinton, offers a format you can keep (telehealth or in-home), and treats the concerns you actually have—such as anxiety, depression, or trauma.
I’m looking for the same things you are
I’m Bekah Lynx, a Resident in Counseling and the owner of Theralynx. Our practice lives at 123 West Lee Avenue in Vinton—close enough to Roanoke that people searching for counseling near me land here, and honest enough that I will not pretend we are a walk-in clinic on a downtown corner.
A therapist who lists “Roanoke” is not automatically the right fit. You need someone who can legally see you in Virginia, who offers a format you can actually keep, and who regularly works with the thing that brought you to search: anxiety, depression, trauma, couples work, or a life that will not settle.
Start with credentials, not a map pin
In Virginia, look for a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) or a Resident in Counseling practicing under supervision. I am a Resident. I practice under clinical supervision, and I say that on my bio on purpose. It is not a footnote. It means a licensed clinician reviews my work. Angela Phillips is an LPC and a supervisor. If you want a fully licensed clinician from session one, book with her. If you want couples work with Gottman Level 1, or individual work around communication, identity, and anxiety, I may be the better match.
You do not need a referral. You can request an appointment yourself.
Format before city
If you live in Salem and work a 3–11 shift, “a therapist in Roanoke” is useless unless they do evenings or video. Ask about format before you fall in love with a headshot.
Online therapy here is HIPAA-compliant video. It is limited to people located in Virginia—and Counseling Compact states—during the session. You need a private place and a working connection. You do not need special software.
In-home counseling covers the greater Roanoke and Lynchburg area: Roanoke, Lynchburg, Vinton, Salem, Bedford, and Altavista. It helps when transportation, caregiving, or leaving the house is the actual barrier. In-home therapy is self-pay only, is not covered by insurance, and includes an additional fee on top of the regular session fee.
Our Vinton address is the official practice address for mail and contact. The office is under construction, and appointments are not held there. Care is video or in-home.
Match the concern, not the keyword list
I work with individuals and couples: relationship patterns, communication, anxiety, identity, life transitions. I do not treat every diagnosis under the sun. If trauma is the center of the work, Angela’s trauma-informed individual counseling may be a better first step. If a teenager will only talk while playing a game, that is therapeutic gaming, which Angela leads.
A parent in Bedford once told me they had called three practices that “serve Roanoke.” Two only offered hours they could not make. The third did not take their insurance. The problem was not motivation. It was logistics. Ask those questions in the first email.
Questions worth asking any clinician:
- Do you see people for anxiety, depression, or trauma—the one that is actually in the way?
- Can we meet by video, in-home, or only in an office?
- Do you take Sentara, Aetna, or Optum, or should I plan for private pay and out-of-network paperwork?
- Are you an LPC, or a Resident under supervision?
You should get fee information before the first session. We do not publish a single number here because fees vary by clinician and service. We will tell you before you book. Sliding scale is limited and depends on availability; ask during intake if that matters.
What “near me” actually means here
Near me, for us, is not a waiting room you wander into off the street. The Vinton address is for mail and contact. Sessions are in-home visits in the Roanoke Valley and Lynchburg, and video anywhere you can legally sit in Virginia. If you are in crisis, that is not this. Call 911 or 988, or go to the nearest emergency room. Outpatient counseling is not emergency care.
For non-emergency support, request an appointment or call (540) 417-9161. Bring questions about format and pacing. You do not need a polished story.
A note on directories and reviews
Psychology Today, Google, and insurance directories will show you names. They will not tell you whether a clinician can do in-home in your ZIP, whether they are a Resident or an LPC, or whether they actually treat depression rather than listing it. Read our FAQs for how we handle fees, privacy, and scheduling. Then talk to a human. If Theralynx is not the right practice, I would rather you find that out in a phone call than after three no-show-friendly intakes somewhere else.
If flexible therapy in Roanoke, Lynchburg, or Vinton is what you need, look at services, meet the clinicians, and start with one clear question: can we meet in a way I can repeat next month?
If you already have a therapist and it is not working
Fit is allowed to change. If you have been going for months and still feel like you are performing, say so—to them, or to a new clinician. You are not being disloyal. Individual counseling only works if you can tell the truth in the room. If you want a second opinion in the Roanoke Valley, we can talk about that without requiring you to bad-mouth anyone.
