What Is In-Home Counseling?

In-home counseling is mental health therapy provided in a client’s home or another approved private setting.

In-home counseling is mental health therapy provided in a client’s home or another approved private setting. Sessions are led by a licensed or supervised clinician and follow the same ethical and clinical standards as traditional therapy.

Rather than requiring clients to travel to an office, in-home therapy allows care to take place within the context of daily life, where many challenges and patterns naturally occur.

Official studies show in-home counseling is effective, particularly for depression, PTSD, and families needing intensive support, by addressing barriers like transportation and tailoring treatment to the home environment, with research highlighting improved treatment adherence, reduced stigma, and better outcomes through methods like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and family systems approaches, though challenges exist in provider training for complex needs like substance use disorders.

In-home therapy can be helpful for:

  • Families with young children or complex schedules
  • Parents and caregivers experiencing high levels of stress
  • Individuals with mobility or health-related limitations
  • Clients managing chronic illness or disability
  • Families navigating advocacy or system-related challenges

In-Home Counseling FAQs

What is in-home counseling?

In-home counseling is mental health therapy provided by a licensed or supervised clinician in a client’s home or another approved private setting. Sessions follow the same ethical, clinical, and confidentiality standards as office-based therapy, with the added benefit of meeting clients in a familiar environment.

Who is in-home counseling best suited for?

In-home counseling can be especially helpful for:

  • Families with young children
  • Parents and caregivers under high stress
  • Individuals with mobility or health-related limitations
  • Clients managing chronic illness or disability
  • Families navigating advocacy, school, or medical systems
  • Clients who find office-based therapy difficult to access

Not all situations are a fit for in-home counseling, and appropriateness is determined collaboratively.

Do you still offer telehealth if in-home counseling isn’t a good fit?

Yes. Theralynx offers both telehealth and in-home counseling. If in-home services are not clinically appropriate or logistically available, telehealth counseling remains a flexible and effective option. Often times, our clients prefer to combine both approaches.

Where do in-home sessions take place?

Sessions typically take place in your home in a private, distraction-reduced space. In some cases, another approved private setting may be discussed. Your clinician will review expectations before services begin.

What do I need to prepare for an in-home session?

We recommend:

  • A private space where conversations cannot be overheard
  • Minimal interruptions during the session
  • Pets secured if they may be disruptive
  • Other household members aware of session boundaries

Your clinician will help you prepare during the intake process.

How long are in-home counseling sessions?

Most sessions last approximately 50 minutes, similar to telehealth sessions.

Does insurance cover in-home counseling?

No. In-home therapy is self-pay only, is not covered by insurance, and includes an additional fee on top of the regular session fee.

Are in-home sessions as effective as office-based sessions?

Yes. In-home counseling can be equally effective and in some cases more effective, because it allows therapy to take place within the context of daily life. The environment can offer valuable insight and support real-world application of skills.

Is an in-home session appropriate for crisis situations?

In-home counseling is not a crisis or emergency service. If you are experiencing an emergency, please call 911 or contact the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. In-home therapy is designed for ongoing, structured care, not emergency intervention.

Can children be present during in-home sessions?

This depends on the type of session and therapeutic goals. For family therapy, children may be included. For individual therapy, expectations around privacy will be discussed in advance.
